BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer has been ordered held on $500,000 cash bail on a drug trafficking charge.
Joseph D'Amelio was arraigned Monday in East Boston District Court, along with his cousin, Anthony Cristallo, of Derry, N.H. Cristallo was also held on $500,000 cash bail on a drug trafficking charge. Both pleaded not guilty.
Authorities say the 38-year-old D'Amelio, of Boston, drove his cruiser to an East Boston auto garage Saturday to claim a FedEx package of 340 OxyContin tablets and 500 Roxycodone tablets.
Shipping facility security officers had opened the package and alerted state police narcotics detectives.
The detectives and their Boston and federal colleagues delivered the package. They arrested D'Amelio and Christallo, and seized $12,000 cash.
An MIT spokeswoman says D'Amelio has been placed on unpaid leave.
